The Essential Guide to Ozempic (Semaglutide)

how to use ozempic

Ozempic helps control blood sugar and supports weight management when combined with a healthy lifestyle

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a prescription injectable medication containing the active ingredient Semaglutide. It is primarily used to help adults with type 2 diabetes improve blood sugar control alongside diet and exercise.

However Ozempic has also gained worldwide attention because many patients experience significant weight loss while using it.

In clinical studies, people using Semaglutide lost an average of around 6%–15% of body weight over one year. This effect happens because the medication changes appetite signals, slows digestion, and helps reduce food intake.

It is important to understand that Ozempic is considered a long-term treatment. If the medication is stopped without maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, weight regain is common.

How Does Ozempic Work?

Ozempic belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It mimics a natural hormone called GLP-1, which your intestines release after eating.

Ozempic works in three main ways:

1. Boosts Insulin Production

It signals the pancreas to release more insulin when blood sugar levels are high.

2. Reduces Sugar Release from the Liver

It decreases the amount of glucose released into the bloodstream.

3. Slows Digestion

It slows gastric emptying, meaning food stays in the stomach longer.

This helps:

  • You feel full longer
  • Appetite decreases
  • Cravings reduce
  • Overall calorie intake drops

Dosing and Dose Escalation

  • Week 1-4: 0.25 mg, the starting dose to help the body adapt
  • Week 5-8: 0.5mg, the standard treatment dose
  • Week 9+: 1mg, if additional control is needed
